Democracy, Growth and Structural Change

The project examines how direct and representative democracy affect growth, innovation and structural change in Swedish municipalities during 1919–1950. The researchers combine historical data on firms, patents and municipal finances with quasi-experimental variation in democratic institutions to identify their economic effects.
